When a high-capacity storage cell is installed onboard a rail car to insure against a prolonged power interruption, problems such as that of installation space for the storage cell, that of exceeding the allowable axle load due to the combined weight of the rail car, and the like may be encountered. To overcome such problems, this rail car is equipped with an auxiliary power device (1) for converting power supplied from an overhead wire, and a first storage cell (2) and a second storage cell (3) for supplying power to a DC load and to communication equipment for external contact, respectively, in place of the auxiliary power device (1) in the event of an interruption in the supply of power from the overhead line. Also provided is a control means for ensuring that the power capacity necessary to restart the auxiliary power device (1) after the supply of power is interrupted remains in the first storage cell (2). After the supply of power from the overhead line is restored, the auxiliary power device (1) is restarted using the remaining capacity in the first storage cell (2). |
