A method for configuring a graphics-processing unit (GPU) in a computer system, comprising: operating the GPU on a current workload; during the operating, predicting an incoming workload to the GPU prior to presentation of the incoming workload to the GPU; determining an operational floor for the GPU based on the incoming workload, wherein the operational floor comprises minimum values for one or more parameters controlling operation of hardware including the GPU in the computer system, wherein the one or more parameters affect a performance level of the GPU; and ensuring that the one or more parameters are each programmed to at least the corresponding minimum value indicated by the operational floor, wherein the operational floor exceeds a configuration of the hardware that is sufficient for the current workload of the GPU.
