Provided is a liquid crystal display element having characteristics such as a short response time, a high voltage retention rate, a low threshold voltage, a high contrast ratio, a long service life, and a low flicker rate. The liquid crystal display element has: an electrode group formed on one or both of a pair of substrates arranged facing one another; a plurality of active elements connected to the electrode group; liquid crystal orientation films formed on the respective facing surfaces of the pair of substrates; and a liquid crystal composition sandwiched between the pair of substrates. The liquid crystal orientation films contain a polymer derived from a polyamic acid having photodegradable groups, and the liquid crystal composition contains at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (1). R1 is C1-12 alkyl or the like; ring A is 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, or the like; Z1 is a single bond or the like; X1 and X2 are hydrogen or fluorine; Y1 is fluorine or the like; and a is 1, 2, 3, or 4. |
