The present invention provides: a catalyst for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell that has superior initial activity and good durability; and a production method for the catalyst. The present invention involves a catalyst for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell obtained by supporting catalyst particles comprising platinum or a platinum alloy on a carbon powder carrier, characterized by having at least sulfo groups (-SO3H) on the catalyst particles, and further characterized in that a fluorine compound having a C-F bond is supported on the catalyst particles. The sulfur content is preferably 800 ppm to 5,000 ppm, based on the mass of the entire catalyst, and the fluorine content is preferably 3 mass% to 24 mass%, based on the mass of the entire catalyst. |
