A personal protection system (10) for an individual, comprising: a head unit (12) to be worn on the head of the individual, the head unit including a ventilation assembly including a fan (50) that discharges air through a front nozzle assembly (34); a hood (92) mounted over the head unit, the hood having a transparent face shield (96); a microphone (238) to convert speech of the individual into electrical signals; an amplifier capable of amplifying the signals produced by the microphone; and a speaker (240) to broadcast the amplified signals through said hood.
