Alkyl aluminium sesquihalides are prepared by reacting aluminium flitters (as defined) with an alkyl halide at a temperature above 100 DEG C., the reaction being carried out by adding the alkyl halide to a dispersion of aluminium flitters in a liquid phase comprising an alkyl aluminium halide or sesquihalide and maintaining the unreacted aluminium flitters within the liquid phase during the course of the reaction. The process is preferably carried out at a temperature between 120 DEG and 150 DEG C., at a pressure below 10 lbs. per sq. inch and using the alkyl halide in excess. It is preferred that the alkyl group in the alkyl halide should contain not more than 4 carbon atoms. The sesquihalide formed may be reacted with a trialkyl aluminium having the same alkyl groups to form dialkyl aluminium halide, or it may be dehalogenated with sodium.
