A vehicle door latch comprises a pivoted bolt having two toggle links 68, 70 hinged together at a knee joint 72 and movable to an unlatched position, in which the knee joint is bent, against the tension of a spring 74, a swingable operator lever 96 which, via a transmission link 110 trips the bolt 68, 70 to said unlatched position upon the operation of a push-knob 28 on the outside of the door, and a locking trip-lever 120 having a coupling link 122 mounted thereon which couples the transmission link 110 to the operator lever 96 when the trip lever 120 is in unlocking position and uncouples said transmission link 110 when the trip lever 120 is in locking position. In the " unlocked " position the trip lever 120 occupies a clockwise position, as viewed in Figs. 3 and 12. In this position a coupling link 122 pivoted on trip lever 120 at 124 is held in an upper position so that a projection 126 on link 122, extending through gap 114 in transmission link 110 and through the gap 104 in operator lever 96, couples them positively together so that when the operator lever is moved clockwise, as viewed in Figs. 3 and 12, by the knob 28, the projection 112 on transmission link 110 strikes the projection 84 on the toggle link 68, and withdraws the lower toggle link 70 from the latch block 76, Fig. 1. In the " locked " position of trip lever 120, i.e. counterclockwise position, the projection 126 of link 122 projects into the lower part 106 of operator lever 96 and therefore does not lock link 110 to it. Movement of operator lever 96 thus does not trip the toggle link 68. Should, however, the door be closed when in " locked " condition, the toggle links still move as a solid member, and through the medium of a projection 86, and a member 128 coupled through a spring 130 to trip lever 120, move said trip lever to the " unlocked " position. Downward movement of a knob 52, Fig. 1, will similarly restore the trip lever 120 to the " unlocked " position.
