A shift determining part of an image display system determines a traveling direction of a vehicle. A composite image generator generates a composite image that shows a periphery of the vehicle and an area that is in a direction opposite to the determined traveling direction of the vehicle in a seamless manner. The periphery is viewed from a virtual viewpoint that is set looking down at the vehicle. A display displays a display image including the composite image. Since the display image includes the composite image that shows the area that is in the direction opposite to the determined traveling direction of the vehicle, a user can notice an object that exists in the direction opposite to the traveling direction of the vehicle by looking at the display image. |
