<p>A random number generation apparatus comprising a device 22 configured to carry out an operation, a timer 24 for timing how long it takes the device to carry out the operation; and a memory 26 for storing the time to carry out the operation, the random number being generated based on the determination of the time taken to carry out the operation. The device may be a processor, and the operation may be the calculation of another random number, for example, by measuring thermal noise. The generated random number may be used in a cryptographic application. Also disclosed is a random number generation apparatus comprising a received signal strength indicator 28, wherein the number is determined by the measured strength of a signal.</p> |
