A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine is capable of switching a combustion mode between a spark ignition combustion mode for combusting a mixture formed in a combustion chamber with spark ignition and a compression ignition combustion mode for combusting the mixture with compression ignition. When the combustion mode is switched from the spark ignition combustion mode to the compression ignition combustion mode, in an internal EGR control for keeping a part of a burnt gas generated by the combustion remaining as an internal EGR in the combustion chamber, an internal EGR amount of the internal EGR is increased, an ignition timing is advanced, and a fuel injection amount is decreased so that an oxygen density contained in the internal EGR used to form the mixture increases. |
