A method of mass spectrometry or ion mobility spectrometry comprises analysing ions and obtaining spectral data whilst varying the value of an operational parameter of a spectrometer (e.g. source fragmentation voltage or cone voltage) such that the operational parameter has different values in different sequential acquisition periods. The spectral data obtained during different acquisition periods may be stored separately and only data obtained in some acquisition periods may be selected for further processing. Alternatively, a specified subset of the data may be stored and the rest discarded. The spectral data obtained in each acquisition period may be associated with its respective operational parameter such that a database search may be performed to match an analyte based on the spectral data at a plurality of operational parameter values. The data of particular acquisition periods are selected for further processing, chosen to obtain optimal spectral data for a particular ion species without the optimum operational parameter for the species having to be known before the experiment. |
