The present invention provides a composite material containing stabilized high-valent iron, which comprises a matrix and water-soluble ferrites and/or ferrates(VI). The matrix is based substantially on inorganic substance. In one advantageous embodiment, the matrix can be a matrix of neutralization sludge from mine water treatment plants. The composite material according to the invention is particularly suitable for the treatment and disinfection of surface, underground water and/or wastewater. The invention further provides a process for preparing the above-described composite material characterized in that a matrix with incorporated iron ions in the oxidation state 2+ or 3+ or mixtures thereof, is subjected to annealing and/or alkaline fusion in the presence of an oxidant. |
