摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup apparatus detecting a position of an optical system and capable of miniaturizing a drive mechanism of the optical system. <P>SOLUTION: The image pickup apparatus includes: an AF lens 12 elastically balanced and supported within a drive range of the optical system by a helical compression spring; and drive control means that controls drive means and drives the AF lens 12 along the optical axis. An image pickup element 110 outputs an image signal of a subject. A CPU 111 calculates a contrast evaluation value of a subject image on the basis of the image signal, stores correspondence information of a drive signal for driving the optical system to the contrast evaluation value, and calculates the position of the optical system on the basis of the drive signal for driving the optical system and the correspondence information of the drive signal to the position of the optical system.
