Disclosed is a rubbing cloth which is free from adhesion of the abrasion powder to liquid crystal cells or a substrate thereof during the rubbing and produces extremely little static electricity. Consequently, the rubbing cloth does not damage an alignment film. Specifically disclosed is a rubbing cloth which comprises a pile structure that is composed of a pile portion and a ground structure portion. The pile portion is configured of a composite filament yarn that is composed of a synthetic fiber having a sheath formed from ethylene vinyl alcohol and a core formed from a material other than ethylene vinyl alcohol, with the weight ratio of the core to the sheath being within the range from 1:2 to 2:1. It is preferable that the compression amount of pile is within the range of 0.2-0.8 mm, the compression stress of the rubbing cloth is within the range of 50-300 gf/cm2, the primary yield point in the compression stress characteristics is not less than 80 gf/cm2, and the difference between the maximum value and the minimum value of the compression stress of the rubbing cloth within the above-mentioned range is not less than 200 gf/cm2. |
