In the bending of a glass sheet into conformity with a concave bending mould in which an upwardly directed face is applied to an end of the sheet to lift the end upwardly in facilitating the depositing of the sheet on the mould during bending, the force applied to the end of the sheet is maintained normal to the sheet surface during the application thereof. The mould 22, supported on a frame 18 comprising U-shaped sides 20 and end posts 19, has a centre section 23 formed with rails 29, 30 and supports 31, 32 parallel thereto joined by blocks 33 with cross struts 34, joined by hinges 25 to end sections 24 formed into rails 35 and parallel supports 36 joined by blocks 37 the end sections 24 being pivotally mounted by a rod 26 joined by links 27 to pins 28 mounted in brackets 21 on the sides 20. At the apex A of the end sections, at which the sheet 45 is supported in the open position, each rail 35 is slotted at 56 and a roller 53 is positioned therein, the roller being supported on a pin 54 between brackets 55 secured to the support 36 to be with its upper part at a tangent to the plane through the adjacent edges of the rail 35. The sheet 45 is supported at intermediate positions by fixed and movable supports 38, 39 secured to the centre section 23 and extending outwardly to engage the glass sheet over the end sections 24. Each support 38, 39 comprises a U-shaped bracket 44 with a support block 40 and locator block 41, each of refractory material, mounted on a support rod 48 secured to the rail 29 or 30, the support 38 being fixed thereto and the support 39 being mounted by a bearing 47 offset from the centre of the U so that the support tends to pivot outwardly to engage a rod 52 in the vertical position of Fig. 4. When engaged by the flat sheet 45 as in Fig. 5, the weight thereof pivots the support 39 till the edges of the sheet are engaged by the locator blocks 41.
