A battery charging apparatus of the present invention is provided with: a circuit block (8-1), which has a power factor improving function, converts a voltage of an alternating power supply into a discretionary voltage or the current, and outputs the voltage or the current; and a circuit block (8-2). The battery charging apparatus is also provided with a connection switching unit (6) which performs, between series connection and parallel connection, connection switching of the input sides of both the circuit blocks (8-1, 8-2). When a voltage of an alternating current power supply (2) is less than a predetermined voltage value, the input sides of the circuit blocks (8-1, 8-2) are connected in parallel by operating the connection switching unit (6), and when the voltage of the alternating current power supply (2) is at a predetermined voltage value or more, the input sides of the circuit blocks (8-1, 8-2) are connected in series. |
