A method of enabling an authentication device includes providing a first enabling target. One or more attributes of the first enabling target is measured with the authentication device at a first time and compared to a first predetermined expected value. When the at least one measured attribute of the first enabling target matches the first predetermined expected value, the authentication device is enabled for only a first predetermined enablement time.

1. A method of enabling an authentication device, comprising:
providing a plurality of enabling targets; measuring one or more attributes of each of the plurality of enabling targets with the authentication device at a first time; providing a plurality of different predetermined expected values; comparing at least one measured attribute of each of the plurality of enabling targets to any of the plurality of different predetermined expected values; and enabling the authentication device for a first predetermined enablement time when the at least one measured attribute matches any of the plurality of different predetermined expected values; wherein the one or more measured attributes are fluorescence or phosphorescence attributes determined by measuring a fluorescence or phosphorescence of the enabling target measured in response to irradiation by an irradiation source.
