PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cloth piece folding device capable of preventing deterioration of a conveyor belt by contact with a folding plate and to provide a method for controlling a cloth piece folding device.SOLUTION: The folding device comprises conveyors 12, 13 for conveying a cloth piece Y and a fold device 32 provided with a folding plate 32a. In the fold device 32, the folding plate 32a can be temporarily stopped at a standby position III between a plunging position I closest to the conveyors 12, 13 and a retraction position II most separated from them.
