PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric double layer capacitor which enables the enhancement of productivity without adversely affecting an internal resistance or a leakage current property.SOLUTION: A separator for an electric double layer capacitor and an electric double layer capacitor comprises the separator. The separator for an electric double layer capacitor comprises: a double layer structure including a fiber layer produced by papermaking with a long or short length of wire cloth and a fiber layer produced by papermaking with a cylinder mold. The fiber layers each include 70 mass% or more of regenerated cellulose fiber. In the separator, the double layer structure has a density of 0.25-0.65 g/cm, and a thickness of 10-150 μm on the whole. The regenerated cellulose used in papermaking of the fiber layer produced by papermaking with a long or short length of wire cloth is regenerated cellulose of which CSF value has lowered to 0 ml(a lower limit value) once by beating and then, risen to 10-600 ml by further beating. The regenerated cellulose used in papermaking of the fiber layer produced by papermaking with a cylinder mold is regenerated cellulose of which CSF value is made 700-0 ml by beating.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
