952,259. Bearings. N. A. WOODWORTH CO. April 27, 1962 [May 25, 1961], No. 16187/62. Heading F2A. A spindle bearing comprises spaced bearing sections 10, 12 mounted on flexible supports 14, 16 with generally-aligned bores 28, 30 (Figs. 2 and 3) having opposed longitudinal slots 28b, 28c and 30b, 30c, a rotatable shaft 26 (Fig. 1) journalled therein, and a screw 50 to flex the sections 10, 12 and their supporting arms 14, 16 lengthwise of the shaft 26 to hold an end portion of each bore 28, 30 against the shaft 26, which bears against and is supported by the opposite side edges of each slot. The slots 28b 28c, 30b, 30c may extend along the length of the sections 10, 12. The bores 28 30 may be relieved annularly at their inner ends as at 30a (Fig. 3) bearing portions being at their outer ends with slots extending therethrough. The screw 50 extending through holes in the sections 10, 12, acts between spaced anchor points 56, 64 adjacent the outer ends of the sections 10, 12 to draw them towards each other with no interference therebetween. The said holes are relieved and spaced circumferentially from the screw between the seat 64 and the threaded portion 56. The arms 14, 16 extend from a base 18 and when vertical support the sections 10, 12 horizontally, the slots being then at the ends of vertical bore diameters. The flexible supports 14, 16 when unstressed are such that the bores 26, 30 are slightly inclined from a common axis, stressing of the screw 50 drawing the sections 10 12 together so as to be oppositely inclined, the shaft 26 then contacting the bores 26, 30 on opposite side edges of the slots to prevent shaft wobble in the bores. A sealing member 46 is between the proximate ends of the sections 10, 12. |
