The method involves operating noble metalliferous exhaust gas subsequent treatment components e.g. oxidation catalyst (16) and particle filter (18), in their entire loading and rotary speed range in a slender manner. The components that are subjected temporarily with a reducing exhaust gas atmosphere are reactivated after lean intervals of preset minutes. The exhaust gas atmosphere has a Lambda value of preset value, under conditions for partially reducing an oxidized precious metal bond. An independent claim is also included for a control unit for controlling a motor vehicle.
