The invention relates to a method for obtaining a Xe-containing product flow (P), in particular a highly pure Xe-containing product flow (P), from a liquid or gaseous ethane-rich input flow (E), comprising the following steps: pretreating, in the case of a gaseous ethane-rich input flow, cooling and possibly partially condensing the input flow (E'), introducing the input flow (E') into a first column (31), withdrawing a top product in the form of a methane-rich gaseous phase (G) from the top of the first column, withdrawing a bottom product in the form of a (methane-poor) Xe-containing liquid phase (F) from the bottom of the first column, introducing the bottom product into a second column (33), and withdrawing the Xe-containing product flow (P) from the top of the second column (33). The coldness required for the condensers of the two columns and possibly the cooling of the input gas is provided by means of an expansion cooling circuit, which is preferably supplied with coolant from a partial flow of the heated top product of the first column.
