Vanadium slag is introduced into either aqueous ammonium sulphate or chloride solution acidified to pH2. At 90-95 DEG C. chlorine gas is passed into the liquid and a substantial portion of the vanadium and iron present in the original slag dissolved. Barium-copper chromate catalyst is treated with a mixed solution of ammonium chloride and nitrate at pH 1.5 to 2.0. After treatment with chlorine gas at 90-95 DEG C. almost all the copper and a major proportion of the barium dissolved.ALSO:Difficulty-soluble silicates, oxides and salts of strong acids are dissolved in an acidic aqueous solution of an ammonium salt, or its equivalent, into which chlorine gas has been passed.
