<p>A material for use in the surface treatment of solid particles comprises a cationic surface-active agent dispersed in an oily vehicle consisting of a mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons which has substantially the composition of the fraction of dephenolated coal tars of which the boiling point range extends from that of naphthalene to that of anthracene, inclusive of both. The surface-active agent may be a monoamine or polyamine which possesses attached to its nitrogen atom or to one of its terminal nitrogen atoms, a C8-22 hydrocarbon group. Particularly useful amines have the general formula R-[NH-(CH2)n]m-NH2 or are the condensation products of compounds of said formula with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, where n is 2 or 3, m is 2-8, and R is a saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched-chain acyclic C8-22 hydrocarbon group. An analysis of a suitable oily vehicle is given in the Specification. The material is used to coat particles, e.g. to facilitate the flotation, flocculation, hydroextraction, filtration and briquetting of coal fines and sludges.</p> |
