Disclosed are a method for activating an IP and a terminal device, which are used for solving the problem in the prior art that because a network cannot identify the protocol type of the IPV4V6, PDP activation initiated by a terminal using an APN of the IPV4V6 dual-stack type is directly rejected by the network and thus a PDP connection cannot be successfully established by using the APN of the IPV4V6 dual-stack type. The method comprises: after a first PDP activation request initiated by a terminal to a network server is rejected, the terminal modifies the protocol type of an APN, the protocol type of the APN carried in the first PDP activation request being the IPV4V6 dual-stack type; and the terminal initiates a second PDP activation request to the network server to activate a data service, the second PDP activation request carrying the modified protocol type. The terminal modifies the protocol type of the APN, and thus can establish a data service with a network that cannot identify the IPV4V6 dual-stack type. |
