PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a particulate matter detector capable of suppressing cracking caused by pouring water on particulate mass detection means and adhesion of a residual material to the particulate mass detection means.SOLUTION: A particulate matter detector 1 comprises: particulate mass detection means 2; temperature detection means 3 detecting a temperature of exhaust gas; a control unit 4; and heating means 24. The particulate mass detection means 2 includes a deposition portion depositing part of particulate matter contained in exhaust gas discharged from an internal combustion engine 5; and a pair of counter electrodes disposed on the deposition portion to be apart from each other. The control unit 4 determines a deposition amount of the particulate matter in the deposition portion on the basis of an electrical signal output from the particulate mass detection means 2, and receives information on the temperature of the exhaust gas detected by the temperature detection means 3. The control unit 4 controls the heating means 24 to heat the deposition portion at 300°C to 800°C at a time of cold start of the engine 5.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
