<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the display quality of a vertical alignment type liquid crystal display device by suppressing light leakage caused by a columnar spacer. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device comprises: a pair of substrates; a vertical alignment film provided for each substrate; a plurality of columnar spacers disposed between the pair of substrates; a liquid crystal layer provided between the pair of substrates; and a pair of polarizers. The vertical alignment film is subjected to a uniaxial orientation process, and an alignment direction 43 of the liquid crystal molecule at an approximately central part of the liquid crystal layer in the thickness direction is approximately parallel to a first direction 41. The absorption axes 48 and 49 of the polarizers are approximately orthogonal to each other, and each is disposed at approximately 45° relative to the first direction and a second direction that is approximately orthogonal to the first direction. Each columnar spacer has a trapezoidal section, which has an upper base, a lower base, and two inclined surfaces between the upper base and the lower base. The outer periphery defining each of the two inclined surfaces extends at an angle of 45°±10° relative to the first direction 41 or the second direction in plan view. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
