A machine for folding paper board blanks comprises a forming die beneath a ram 11 and forming head 14, which folds the walls of the blank perpendicular to the base, a pair of folding elements 13 pivotally mounted in the die and operated by a solenoid 12, and means for causing the ram to dwell for a period of time between the elements 13. The blank has a base and four upstanding walls with corner flaps joined to the walls and flaps on two opposed walls to embrace the corner flaps and lock the walls in planes perpendicular to the plane of the base. In operation the blank 16 is placed on the die and operates a switch to start the motor and cause the ram 11 to descend, and the forming head 14 engage and fold the blank between the bending bars 10. A rod 17 and plate 18 (Fig. 2) locate the blank between the elements 13, a timer switch is operated to stop the motor for a period of time and energize the solenoid 12 so that elements 13 are rotated by means of a rod 22 and tapes 21 to engage and fold the flaps into locking engagement with the corner flaps. When the time switch de-energizes the solenoid, spring means 23 pulls the elements 13 clear of the box, the ram moves upwardly and the rod 17 is restrained to strip the box from the die. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the elements 13 are mounted on a pivot shaft 25 with a pinion 26 on each shaft meshing with a rack 27. Four corner plates 15 are provided to engage the corners of the base portion of the blank and have a screw-threaded part in mesh with a screw in the ram to move them inwardly to be clear of the folding elements 13. The ram 11 is provided with a rack engaged with a pinion on a shaft connected to the motor and also connected to a second shaft with a cam plate having lobes engaging switches controlling the sequence of operations. A device, Fig. 3 (not shown), for prefolding the blank 16 before it reaches the die comprising blade members positioned either side of and below the head 14, may be attached to pillars 29 (Fig. 2) and connected to the head by a tension spring (not shown). |
