In a dummy shuttle loom, the shuttle, Figs. 1 and 5 has oppositely disposed thread gripper devices, one only of which having jaws 3, 4 and an actuator plate 2 is shown, which co-operate respectively with thread injectors 1 at each side of the loom. These injectors are mounted with thread cutters 19 and weft spools 15 on the machine frame 18, Fig. 2, and each has an eye through which the thread 8 from the associated spool 15 passes. On a heating-up movement of the sley 17 the injector 1 enters the shuttle to abut the plate 2 to cause the jaws 3, 4 to grip the thread 8 of a previously laid weft from the spool at that side and to be locked by a latch 7 as in Fig. 5. At the same time a thread puller 23 on the sley draws some slack thread off the spool to accommodate the return movement of the sley. The shuttle is then picked by means not shown or described and carries the thread across the fabric, the thread between the shuttle and the previously laid weft being drawn across and severed by the cutter 19. When the shuttle reaches the other side of the fabric 12 the thread gripper 3,4 is released by a cam 11 on the sley engaging a lever 6 of latch 7. The operation is repeated with the injector on the other side of the loom engaging the thread from the spool on that side with the other gripper device on the shuttle for the return pick. |
