[Also in Division B7] A structure, Figs. 1-8 (not shown), made from ferrous or non-ferrous metal or other thermoplastic sheet material comprises a rib (1) of angular cross-section stamped in the sheet and having a gradually reduced cross-section at one end, a second stamped rib (2) adjacent the first, and a joint-plate (10) overlapping the first rib (1) and extending the rib-profile up to the second rib (2). The joint-plate is welded, adhesively-bonded or riveted to the part (9) from which the ribs are stamped and the side (6) of the second rib (2); it may also be welded to the first rib (1). The sheet may be cut away at the end of the first rib (1), or this may be terminated short of the second rib (2, Fig. 2). The ribs may form the door-post (1) and top rail (2) of a motor vehicle (Fig, 5), the post being severable along a line (16) for repair or modification of the vehicle. In a further form (Fig. 6) the post (17) extends into the rail (2), and a waist portion is formed near the junction. A radiused joint-plate (20) (Fig. 7) is used at the junction between the post (1) and floor-rail (23). A joint plate (27, Fig. 8) may be used between the floor-ribs (26) and side rail (25).</p> |
