[Also in Divisions G3 and G4] A circuit having two inputs is arranged to provide an output which is proportionate only to that one of the inputs which is chosen, the choice being of that input which is the algebraically smaller or greater, or arithmetically smaller or greater. As shown, two inputs 11, 12, proportionate respectively to the speed and a temperature of a gas-turbine, are fed to an additive circuit 13 and a subtractive circuit 14. The additive circuit is polarity-conscious, the subtractive circuit magnitude-conscious without regard to polarity. The resultant outputs 15, 16 are fed to a polarity-conscious circuit 17, which, when additive, has an output 18, which is proportional to the input which is algebraically the greater. Conversely, when circuit 17 is subtractive the output 18 is porportional to the input which is algebraically the smaller. It is stated that the circuits can be formed from push-pull magnetic amplifiers, the circuit 14 being followed by a fullwave rectifier to ensure the output is unidirectional. By modification of the circuit so that circuits 13, 14 are magnitude conscious, it can be arranged to provide an output which is proportional to the input which is arithmetically the greater or smaller by making circuit 17, respectively, polarity or magnitude conscious.</p>
