Provided are an image forming apparatus which determines the pollution of the photo sensor used in color arrangement and the pollution degree and automatically cleans a photo sensor, and a control method thereof. According to an embodiment, the image forming apparatus includes an intermediate transfer material which has overlapped images of different colors and is transferred; a photo sensor which emits light and receives light reflected from the intermediate transfer material; a cleaning unit which cleans the photo sensor; and a control part which controls the cleaning unit to clean the photo sensor if the quantity of light which the photo sensor receives is less than the quantity of predetermined reference reception light.
