Performing a clear operation absent host intervention

Optimizations are provided for frame management operations, including a clear operation and/or a set storage key operation, requested by pageable guests. The operations are performed, absent host intervention, on frames not resident in host memory. The operations may be specified in an instruction issued by the pageable guests.

a memory; and a processor in communication with the memory, wherein the computer system is configured to perform a method, the method comprising:
based on initiating execution of an instruction issued by a pageable guest executing within the computing environment and specifying a clear operation, determining a usage intent characteristic for a guest frame to be cleared, the guest frame not resident in host memory; andperforming the clear operation absent host intervention, the performing being based on the determined usage intent characteristic.
