A garment support of foam synthetic material for an ironing machine is of constant thickness and of different degrees of softness at different points on the garment-contacting surface. Fig. 2 shows a garment support on an ironing table 13 and having a central part 11 stuck to harder outer parts 10, the large surfaces of the support being cemented to fabric layers 12. The fabric layers 12 may be dispensed with and the interfaces between parts 10, 11 may be vertical. The softer part 11 deforms to accommodate buttons or seams. Fig. 4 shows an ironing press with platens 15, 19 ironing a garment 20 with button 21, the lower platen 15 having a garment support 16 consisting of upstanding pins 22 integral with a flat portion 16a, and covered by layers of textils material 17,18. In a modification, pins 22 protrude from both sides of flat portion 16a which may together with platen 15 have holes for the discharge of vapour. The pins 22 may be circular or square in cross-section. Alternatively pins fit through the holes in a mesh of fabric, wire or glass fibre, or rest on flanges in recesses in a metal frame, and may be holed for leading away vapour. Some of the pins 22 may have different widths from others, and the same applies to the spaces 23 between them. |
