In a balloon catheter the balloon is inflated by a liquid which, during storage, is maintained under pressure within a reservoir but which, when required, is released from the reservoir by valve means, so as to flow into the balloon. In the form shown, the liquid 23 is held under pressure in a distensible bulb 22 by a sealing disc 27 located transversely in the tube 17. However, when this disc is turned, by suitable manipulation, so as to lie parallel to the axis of the tube, the bulb 22 collapses and the liquid flows into the balloon sac 14, to distend it. When the catheter is to be withdrawn, the balloon is collapsed by cutting or puncturing the tube 17 to allow the enclosed liquid to escape. It is alternatively possible to seal the tube 17 by doubling back the tube and tying it or by an enclosed plug with a rupturable seal. |
