A gas sensor is specified for detecting oxygen in a gas mixture, comprising – an oxygen ion conductor and – at least two electrodes arranged on the oxygen ion conductor, wherein the gas sensor is configured in such a way that both electrodes contact the gas mixture during operation of the gas sensor, – a control unit configured for applying a polarization voltage or a polarization current at the electrodes during a polarization time period, – a measuring unit for measuring the current or the voltage at the electrodes, – an evaluation unit for determining the oxygen content from the measured voltage or the measured current, wherein the oxygen content is determined from the current during, in particular at the end of, the polarization time period, the charge flowing during the polarization time period, or the voltage directly after the polarization time period.
