PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that can suppress the occurrence of image deletion after the start of use of a charging member during which the number of image formation is small, and a movement control method for a cleaning member.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes: an image carrier that carries a toner image formed with a toner containing metal oxide; a charging member that is provided in contact with the image carrier to charge the image carrier; a cleaning member that removes the metal oxide adhered to the surface of the charging member; and a moving mechanism that move the cleaning member between a first position in contact with the charging member and a second position separated from the charging member. When execution conditions for image forming processing of forming a predetermined toner image on the surface of the image carrier is satisfied (Yes in step S2) and the number of accumulated prints is equal to or less than the reference number of prints (Yes in step S3), the cleaning member is moved from the first position to the second position (step S4 to step S6).
