The device has a fixing unit allowing rotation of a basic section (10) between horizontal and vertical positions relative to an axis (A-A) perpendicular to a wall (M). Another fixing unit comprises a hook that is mounted relative to a support. The hook acts on a part of the section adjacent to an upper end of the section or on a part of a hollow or profiled tube (15) to oppose rotation of the section from a driving position towards the horizontal position in a position of the hook. The rotation of the section is opposed by the hook in another position of the hook. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a kit comprising a rising scale for a protection device (2) a method for working on a roof.
