Apparatus for spinning yarns of conjugate filaments having two constituents comprises a spinneret having a single ring of orifices, and two coaxial tubes, the axes being substantially perpendicular to the face of the spinneret, whereby one of the constituents may be fed under pressure through the inner tube and the other constituent may be fed under pressure through an annular space between the two tubes. The internal diameter of the outer tube may be the same as the diameter of the useful internal part of the spinneret. The diameter of the ring of spinneret orifices need not be the same as the diameter of the inner tube, since the pressures exerted on the two constituents to be spun cause them to leave side-by-side through each orifice of the spinneret regardless of the distance between the orifices and the ends of the wall of the inner tube. In one embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), one constituent is fed through the interior 6 of tube 1 and the other constituent through the annular space 7 between tubes 1 and 2. The two constituents pass together through orifices 4 in spinneret 3. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the end of the inner tube, instead of being open is provided with a cap 16 having orifices 17. The proportions of the constituents in each filament may be adjusted by controlling the relative rates of flow of the constituents. The apparatus may be used in the wet, dry, melt or semi-melt spinning of e.g. cellulose xanthate, cellulose esters, or addition or condensation polymers. Two-colour yarns and yarns having a helical crimp may be obtained.</p> |
