With respect to a mechanical seal for which one of two sealing rings is made to function as a sliding bearing, the objectives of the present invention are to eliminate the need for axial movement of the sealing ring that also functions as a sliding bearing, thereby reducing radial play in a bearing part as much as possible, and to facilitate the exchanging of the sealing rings. This mechanical seal, which is mounted in a shaft seal part formed between a housing (1) and a rotary shaft (2), thereby sealing the interval between the housing (1) and the rotary shaft (2), is characterized by being equipped with a stationary-side sealing ring (20) and a rotation-side sealing ring (21) that opposes and makes sliding contact with the stationary-side sealing ring (20), and of the stationary-side sealing ring (20) and the rotation-side sealing ring (21), one sealing ring (20) is installed on the sealed fluid side and constituting a sliding bearing that supports the rotary shaft (2), and a pressing member (25) for biasing the other sealing ring (21) in the axial direction and pressuring the sealing surfaces of the two sealing rings is mounted on the other sealing ring (21), which is installed on the opposite side from the sealed fluid side. |
