The invention relates to a method for sorting postal items in a postal sorting rack including sorting boxes, according to which the items to be sorted are placed in a pile, taken one by one from the top of the pile and each placed in a box of the rack, automatically creating, with a specific frequency, digital images of the top of the pile, characterised by the following steps: a) recording (300) data of said digital images in the memory of a processor unit; b) comparing (310) said digital images with one another according to a certain requirement of graphical similarity such as to form image models each representing similar digital images; c) associating a persistence time with each image model; and d) applying (330) a time filter to said image models in order to delete those having a persistence time that is lower than a certain threshold value, the remaining number of models being used for automatically counting the sorted postal items. |
