The present invention comprises a gas sensor (10, 20, 30, 40, 50) for detecting NO and NO2 in a gas mixture, having - an oxygen ion conductor (11), - at least two electrodes (12, 13, 21) arranged on the oxygen ion conductor (11), wherein - the gas sensor (10, 20, 30, 40, 50) is configured in such a manner that, during the operation thereof, both electrodes (12, 13, 21) are in contact with the gas mixture, wherein the gas sensor (10, 20, 30, 40, 50) also has - a heating device (16) for heating the oxygen ion conductor (11) and the electrodes (12, 13, 21) to a temperature of at least 300°C, wherein the heating device (16) is configured a) to heat each of the at least two electrodes (12, 13, 21) to a different temperature, or b) to heat the at least two electrodes (12, 13, 21) to the same temperature, wherein the temperature level can be varied in a predefinable temporal profile.
