The present invention improves sealing between a floating ring (130) and a rotating ring (110). A mechanical seal (100) for sealing a ring-shaped gap between a rotating shaft (200) and a housing (300), the mechanical seal being characterized in: comprising a rotating ring (110) that rotates together with the rotating shaft (200), a fixed ring (120) that is fixed with respect to the housing (300), and a floating ring (130), which is provided between the rotating ring (110) and the fixed ring (120) in the axial direction of the rotating shaft (200) and has a sliding section (131) that moves in sliding contact with the rotating ring (110); the fluid to be sealed being sealed by the sliding section (131) of the floating ring (130) that moves in sliding contact with a sliding section (111) of the rotating ring (110); and the sliding section (131) having multiple carbon fibers and silicon carbide provided between the multiple carbon fibers.
