A display for a fuel consumption meter of a vehicle and method for calculating displayed data of the fuel consumption meter is provided. A dashboard having a fuel mileage meter for displaying current fuel consumption 101, a corresponding actual speed 102 at a common indicator line 104 and the display also showing at least one calculated value for fuel consumption at a different speed to actual speed 107. Optionally a gear indicator 111 and fuel economy display are provided wherein the fuel consumption increase 115 and fuel consumption decrease 114 are displayed in a way to help the driver of the vehicle optimize fuel consumption. A method for estimating fuel consumption is provided, preferably involving self learning and adaptive capabilities, using parameters and variable values according to the motor management data which uses a recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm.
