A first user 112A sends a balance object including their account balance to an issuer 103 e.g. a bank with a balance adjustment request or to an operator 102 with a voucher request via public network 109 e.g. the internet. Where a balance adjustment request is sent the message may include e.g. card or account details to allow funds to be transferred into or from the users account. The issuer updates the balance object with the new account balance and returns it to the user. Where a payment is to be made to a second user 112B the operator 102 updates the balance object according to the voucher value and generates a new voucher for return, with the updated balance object to the first user, who provides the voucher to the second user. The second user sends the voucher and a balance object including the second users account balance to the operator for suitable account balance adjustment. The balance object and vouchers may be hashed to avoid fraud or double patenting and may include signatures. Communications are encrypted using public/private key pairs. Thus payments may be made anonymously, the first and second users not needing to share personal information. |
