A vehicle e.g. an bicycle, scooter or wheelchair has an electrical drive wheel hub system 30 incorporated in the vehicle, the wheel hub 18 being driven by an electric motor 31 formed by a brushless DC motor having wound stators 40 and rotor magnets 42. The electric motor is arranged to drive an epicyclic gear system 32 which provides a reduction gear arrangement to drive the hub 18. Located entirely within the periphery of the stator is power and associated control circuitry for the electric motor, the circuitry being provided on printed circuit boards 70, 71. Support 44 carries the stator cores and rotor bearings 45, located within the periphery of the stator, support the rotor about the fixed spindle 17. Sun wheel 51 secured to the rotor engages planetary reduction gears 53 which engage to rotate the annular planet gear 54 which is secured to the hub cover plate 36, the reducing gear carrier 52 being fixed with respect to the spindle 17. Bearings 34,35 rotatably support the hub 18,36 with respect to the spindle 17, which spindle mounts the wheel/hub assembly to the vehicle. Additional control electronics, sensors, battery and charger are provided on the vehicle. |
