A method (200) for determining a distance between a device (102) and an object (104a), the method (200) comprising: emitting (202) an acoustic reference signal (114) from a speaker (108) of the device (102); receiving (204) an acoustic input signal (400) at a microphone (110) of the device (102), the acoustic input signal (400) including a measurement portion including a reflection (116a) of the acoustic reference signal (114) off the object (104a); cross correlating (206) at least the measurement portion with the emitted acoustic reference signal (114) to provide a cross correlated signal (402); receiving (208) information relating to the object (104a); extracting (210) a section of the cross correlated signal (402) corresponding to reflection (114a) of the acoustic reference signal (114) by the object (104a), based on the received information; analysing (212) the extracted section of the cross correlated signal (402) to determine a time of flight between emitting the acoustic reference signal (114) and receiving the reflection (116a); and determining (214) the distance between the device (104a) and the object (104a) based on the determined time of flight and known characteristics of the acoustic reference signal (114a). A chipset for performing the method is also disclosed. |
