517,554. Self - levelling and suspension apparatus. HOLT, C. F. July 30, 1938, Nos. 22720 and 33027, [Class 113 (i)] A table T for the horizontal support of navigational instruments such as compasses, speed and distance indicators, and altimeters, or range-finders, firecontrol gear, artillery &c. in air, water, or land craft, is supported by springs V<1> from projections W on a cruciform frame F rotatably mounted on a frame B hung by floating pivots Q from a gimbal ring pivotally mounted on the vehicle. The pivots Q are grooved wheels borne by carriages 6 subject to the pressure of radial springs S<1>, S<2>; and the frame B is supported on rails 12, Fig. 4, projecting from a carriage 11 supported by knife-edged wheels on the wheels Q; springs R<2> lie between the carriage and the frame B. The height of the gimbal ring above the centre of gravity of the moving mass and the strengths of the springs S<1>, S<2>, R<2> are so proportioned that forces developed by accelerations of the vehicle do not affect the horizontality of the table. To balance the effect of forces acting only on the tables, such as automatic movements of instruments, handling &c. a weighted sphere S is guided iri two frames 48, 51 movable at right angles through shafts and gearing including a shaft 45, Fig. 13, carrying a wheel 44 driven from one or other of wheels 42, 43 rotating oppositely according as an armature 37 is attracted to the solenoid 35 or 36. These solenoids are energized by tilting contacts carried by the table and coacting with contacts 17 on the spindle 2, or by use of photo-electric cells and lamps carried by the table, and mirrors carried by the frame F, the excited current operating a relay to energize the required solenoid.
