The present invention provides a reversible compression mechanism for compressing a header of a transport stream packet for transmission in a digital broadcast network. In particular, a physical layer pipe for transmitting the transport stream packet is selected in accordance with the packet identifier of the transport stream packet and the packet identifier of the transport stream packet is replaced with a short packet identifier which indicates at least whether the transport stream packet is a NULL packet.
