1. A method for detecting automatic identification system (AIS) messages, the method comprising:
providing digital data representing signals received by a satellite on at least one AIS channel; composing at least one hypothetical fragmentary message, the at least one hypothetical fragmentary message comprising bits from one or more static fields specific to a transmitter identified in a database of AIS transmitters; identifying a candidate message in the digital data by correlating the digital data with the at least one hypothetical fragmentary message; decoding the candidate message to produce a decoded message in response to the candidate message being identified in the digital data; and updating the database of AIS transmitters by utilizing information contained in the decoded message, wherein the at least one hypothetical fragmentary message comprises at least one AIS message fragment that is dependent on at least one of a transmission time and a transmitter position and that is determined with an assistance of the database of AIS transmitters.
